In spite of the heavy restrictions and frequent censorship by the government, China has managed to surpass the United States for the most online users in the world. The China Internet Network Information Center has compiled the numbers which indicate that China now has 253 million total Web surfers, with the United States coming in at an estimated 223 million users. However, one should note that China has a population of more than 1.3 billion people compared to just 301 million of United States. So, looking at it from a different perspective, only 19.1 percent of the Chinese population is connected to the Web. On the other hand, 71 percent of homes in the US are wired, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Here are a few facts about Internet usage in China; • Chinese users under the age of 30 make up nearly 69 percent of the country’s Internet users • Web usage is expected to grow up to 18 percent per year • Number of Internet users in the country is estimated to be 490 million by 2012 • 29 percent of all Chinese Internet users accessed the Internet through their phones
