Google is a wonderful tool as it is. But there is always room for improvement.

Google is constantly experimenting with new ideas and features targeted towards improving the users’ search experience.

Here is a brief look at some of the experiments presently on.

Alternate views for search results

View on a timeline: See the search results sorted based on time. You can also limit the results to a particular time frame.

View on a map: Needless to say the results are displayed in relation to Google map.

Infoview: In this view you can focus on the terms that are most important to you like dates, measurements, locations and images.

Keyword suggestions
As you type your search, Google’s technology provides alternative suggestions to your queries in real time. This feature is also available on Google Labs as Google Suggest.

Keyboard shortcuts
This feature lets you navigate search results using keyboard shortcuts, so you can quit reaching for the mouse every time you want to move up and down the results list.

Key Action
J Selects the next result.
K Selects the previous result.
O Opens the selected result.

Opens the selected result.
/ Puts the cursor in the search box.

Removes the cursor from the search box.

Two others, namely, the Left-hand search navigation and the Right-hand contextual search navigation, add contextual menus with items related to your results to the left or right side of the page when you conduct deeper topical searches.

You can actually try using these features at Google Experimental and probably suggest new ideas too.
