Microsoft vine is a tool to help people stay in touch with each other in difficult and urgent circumstances.

Microsoft Vine, which is in beta testing and works with any web-connected device, lets you send alerts (short messages) and reports (longer messages) about your whereabouts.

The messages appear on other members’ dashboards, alongside news stories and information on a map of the relevant area.

As well as keeping the public informed during crises, Microsoft hopes Vine will let emergency services contact people in need of help. Vine works on web-enabled phones, so you will be able to send messages even during widespread internet or power outages.

Apparently the main inspiration for Vine came from the problems people had communicating after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.

Microsoft hopes to recruit 10,000 people in Seattle to test Vine in its beta phase. Potential users can sign up at the site to receive updates of Vine’s progress.
