Most of us would like to know about our Internet usage. For instance, you might have taken a plan which allows you a data transfer of say 1GB per month. Usage beyond 1GB would be charged extra. Most of the ISPs do provide a basic report in their site on your Internet usage. But the problem is that the report is too basic and also the report is not realtime, meaning that you usage will not be reflected in the report until after a few hours or even one day.
The better way to monitor your usage is to use an application specifically designed for the purpose, like the NET Traffic Meter, a freeware.

NET Traffic Meter allows you to monitor the traffic on a selected network or modem interface. The main interface displays a simple traffic graph, but looking closer reveals that it includes many useful features to monitor your volume, down and upload rates as well as general statistics (daily, weekly, monthly). The program also includes a connection speed stopwatch and an alert feature that enables you to set alerts and be notified when specific upload/download conditions are met. It also offers a unique audio ticker that can play a short notification sound whenever a specified amount has been transferred (e.g a beep for every 1 mb downloaded).
