Everything‘ is a very fast folder and file name search engine for Windows. It is a free tool from voidtools.

Everything‘ initially displays every file and folder on your computer (hence the name “Everything”).
You type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed. It searches by names of folders and files and does not look into the content of files.

Everything - An extremely fast file name search engine for Windows

Everything works on Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista. However, it will only locate files and folders on local NTFS volumes. For a tool that is just about 500KB in size, Everything does a marvelous job. It indexes the files pretty quickly. For a total number of file of a little over 215,000 files on my laptop, it took less than 3 seconds to index.

Once indexed, it displays a list of all the files and folders. When you type in the search filter, it instantly filters the list and displays only the ones that match your query. You can search for files/folders by simply typing in a part of the file/folder name or you could build advanced queries using wildcards and regex. Check out the faq on the voidtools website to learn how to use Everything.

You can either install Everything or you could download the zip file, extract it and use it a as a portable tool. Since, the indexing is extremely fast, you could run Everything from your USB flash drive, and use it to search files on any computer, as long as the drive uses NTFS file system.
