Gmail has introduced a new feature - now you can open PowerPoint attachments as slideshows right within your browser, without having to download anything.
To open a Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT) file without downloading it to your computer:
- Open the message containing an attachment.
- Click View as slideshow at the bottom of the message.
This will open your slides in a new browser window. You can navigate between slides by clicking the left and right arrow buttons at the top of the screen. You could even view a specific slide from the dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the screen.
There is no auto-play option or support for animations or transitions. You just view one slide at a time. But that is understandable. The main idea is to be able to get to be able to view the slide immediately.
You may already know that Word (.doc) and Excel (.xls) document attachments can already be opened using Google Docs and Spreadsheets. But you need to sign into Google to read them.
But in the case of PowerPoint files the attachments straightaway open in the browser - no sign in required. This is quite welcome. Probably, if the much rumoured ‘Presently’ gets launched then things might change.
You could also try Zoho Quickread to open your documents in your browser using Zoho applications.
