In a recent development, people at AMD set a new over-clocking performance record. Over-clocking as you might be aware, is a method to run CPUs (processors) at a higher clock rate (more clock cycles per second) that what was specified by the manufacturer to achieve a performance increase. Mostly of interest to those technology enthusiasts who take pleasure in pushing technology to its limits.

The extreme sport of over-clocking computer processors set a new record by pushing the limits to which a processor chip can be cooled and then clocked to pump up its performance.   A group of enthusiasts, with the help of cooling techniques using liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, cooled the AMD Phenom II X4 processor to near absolute zero temperature and over-clocked it to a mind-boggling 6.5 GHz. That’s more than twice the 3 GHz clock speed of the best CPU available currently from AMD and a huge step forward from the default frequency of 1.8 GHz for that chip. In common parlance, it is the equivalent of taking a Honda City and then pushing it to the speeds of a Formula 1 Car! :-) .

Here is a video recording of the event.
