Add any Search Engine to the Firefox search bar with ease

The search bar in the Firefox browser is pretty useful when it comes to searching the web without having to first go to the search engine page.

The default search engine in Firefox is Google but you can change it to an engine of your preference by using the ‘Manage Search Engines’. If it is not available in the Mozilla site you can try at mycroft.mozdev.org which has a huge collection of search plugins.

Actually I wanted to be able to search Google images through the Firefox search bar but could not find the addon at the Mozilla site.

Instead I came across Add to Search Bar extension. Once you install ‘Add to Search Bar’ extension adding new search engines to the Firefox search bar is a breeze.

To add a new search engine to the search bar just open up the search page that you want to add, right click on the text box and click ‘Add to Search Bar‘.

For example to add Search for Google images, open up the Google images search page. Right-click on the search box and on the context menu click on ‘Add to Search Bar‘. A window pops up asking for a name for the search and also an icon. Change them if you want and click OK. That’s all to it. The Google Image Search is now an option in the Firefox search bar.

The next time you want to search Google images you can just type the search term in the search bar, select Google Image Search and hit enter.

To tell you the fact, I do have the Google toolbar installed that I could use it to search Google images. But now that I can use the Firefox search bar itself, I would most probably keep the Google toolbar hidden so that I would have a little more real estate for the web pages.

Those of you who already have a lot of extensions installed and are afraid that another extension added to your Firefox might slow it down, then here is a surprise. Once you have added your favorite search engines to the search bar, you can uninstall the ‘Add to Search Bar’ extension.

Removing the extension will not remove the added engines. They will remain.

So no worries.
