Autofocusing is generally a desirable feature for a scanner to have. It ensures that the scanned image will be in focus. But autofocusing requires multiple scans with the scanner analysing the results of each test scan. This can raise overall scan time significantly.
What’s more, the extra analysis may not always improve the quality of the image enough to justify the time that it takes. If your scanner has an autofocus feature, you might want to experiment with turning it off to see how much the scan quality actually degrades. In some cases, you can turn off the autofocus for preview scans only, while still keeping it active for the final scan.
