How to stop YouTube videos from downloading in the background

When you are playing a YouTube video and want to stop it what do you do? You click on the pause button. Well, there really is no Stop button in the YouTube player.

But the problem is that when you pause the video, the video keeps downloading in the background. This is fine and quite useful if you are going to continue viewing the video later. But otherwise it is a sheer waste of precious bandwidth.

Fortunately, while there is no Stop button in the player, you can still stop it. Just right-click anywhere on the video and in the context menu that pops up you will find the option ‘Stop download’. Clicking it will really stop the video – no downloads in the background.

I would have preferred a dedicated stop button as part of the controls but till YouTube (rather Google) decides to implement that you can use the right-click.

Note: Click on the image to view the video. This kid is amazing. As one of the commenters on the video says, close your eyes and listen to it. It’s hard to believe that it was played solo.
