Did you know that you can set priorities for different applications in Windows XP and Vista? And it is quite easy too.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del any time you want to change priorities and select the Processes tab.
Right-click on the process you are interested in and from the pop-up menu you can choose to set the priority anywhere from Low to Realtime.
Elevating the priority of a program will assign more resources to the application. On the other hand if you have a program sitting in the system tray and mostly doing nothing, you can set its priority to low.
Any full screen application automatically gets the highest priority by default. This tweak is particularly useful for background applications.
A word of caution. If you set too many items as high priority it could bog down your system and could actually become counter productive.
