Most of us Windows users would have, at some point, tried moving the taskbar to a position other than the bottom edge. And, if you are like me, you would have probably changed it back to the bottom edge after a few minutes.
I guess, the reason most of us revert back to the default position is that the other positions do not lend any advantage. And, we are so used to working with the taskbar at the bottom that changing to any other position disorients us.
Recently, I switched to a 19” wide monitor and I must say that things are a little different. I tried positioning the taskbar on the right edge of the screen. Again, it did feel a little weird. But I realised that the vertical layout lets me work with multiple applications much better. With the taskbar laid horizontal, you could have utmost 4 to 5 windows open, before the taskbar becomes crowded and the window names become unreadable.
But with the taskbar standing upright (and slightly widened), you can stack 20+ tabs and still tell at a glance which is which. And since it is a wide screen, you don’t feel like you are losing out on the usable screen estate.
Just give it a try and once you overcome the initial disorientation, you just might prefer the vertical taskbar to the old way.
