There is one great feature in Microsoft Word that most people are not aware of. Word can recover text from virtually any file.

For instance, you can recover text from an Excel spreadsheet or a Word document with an error or a doc from another office suite which you would normally not be able to open in Word. You can even extract text from an .exe file. As long as the file contains text, you should be able to recover the text.

Here is how you recover text from a file using Word.

  • In the main menu select File>Open (If you are using Word 2007, click on the Office button on the top left and select Open)
  • Recover text from any file using Microsoft Word
  • In the “Files of type” drop-down box select “Recover Text from Any File
  • Choose your file and click on Open

Depending on the type and size of the file, Word will take a few moments to recover the text and display it in a word document. The recovered text may not be very nicely formatted, but atleast it will save you the trouble of typing out the text.
