Revive a hung Computer without rebooting

This item was filled under [ Tips & Tricks, Windows XP ]

Have you ever been using your computer and your system suddenly stops responding in ways like it if you try to open any program it just hangs? But if you notice carefully you will find that not everything is hung. Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. If the Windows Task Manager appears then chances are good that you can bring back your system to normalcy without a hard reboot.

Here is what to do:

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Del
  • Go to the ‘Processes‘ tab and click explorer.exe once and then click ‘End Process‘. All other Windows except the Windows Task Manager will vanish. Even the icons on the Desktop will be removed.
  • Now, click File > New Task and type explorer.exe. The system should start functioning normally now. Of course, if you were working on some application then you will have to open them again.

If the problem is major and restarting explorer.exe doesn’t solve the issue, then you may have to actually shut down the system and start again.

Lol!! Just makes me happy that i changed to Linux! No blue screen of death, unexplained hangups and the sorts… No matter the problem ctrl+alt+(any F# key) brings up a login screen text mode to help you solve the app-hang up. Gotta love the : kill -9 process id !
