If you are running Vista, you might find that some of your older applications may not work as expected in Vista. Fortunately, Vista has built in a compatibility mode that will run a program in a previous version of Windows that is more compatible.
To run an application in compatibility mode, just right-click the program icon and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and enable the ‘Run this program compatibility mode for:’ tab and below it choose an earlier version of Windows, like XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 or even Windows 95.
You can further change other settings like running the program in 640×480 resolution or downsize to 256 colors. You can experiment with various settings until you find one that works for your application.
While running an program in compatibility mode will remove most windows related issue with software compatibility, it won’t handle hardware incompatibilities. Nevertheless, this is a great option to run many of your older applications or games in Vista.
