Sugarcodes – Makes searching the web easier

Google is great for searching the web for any kind of information and the Google greatness of the Google interface is in it’s simplicity. But sometimes we do not want to search the whole web. We may want to search only a particular website for that special information. For example you may want to check out the price of a particular camera from cnet.com. Of course, you can directly go to the cnet site and search using the sites own search engine. Doing a google advanced search for your keyword, restricting the results to only display pages from cnet will not do you much help here.

Sugarcode The Web

Here is where Sugarcodes comes out as a nice tool to search the web. Sugarcodes has numerous predefined codes that represent a website. For example g for google, b for blogger, dl for download.com, yt for youtube and so on. So to search for an information in a particular website you would type the code for the website followed by your keyword. For instance to search for ‘browsers’ in download.com you would type dl browsers. What you get are the results of the search from download.com as if you had entered the search query in download.com. Quite a time saver if you constantly search different websites.

Besides the predefined codes you can create you own codes if you want. For instance, I have created the code dq for Digital Quest. So to search for a term in Digital Quest you can type dq searchterm and you would get the results from this blog.

Apart from searching you can also use Sugarcodes for navigational purpose in which case it sort of acts like a bookmarker. If you just enter g without any search term, Sugarcodes will take you to Google’s homepage. This works for all the codes. So typing just dq and hitting enter will bring you to this blog’s main page.

There can be few tricky situations. For example suppose you are looking for some information on the Amazon river and would like to search the web using Google. If you just type the words amazon river in Sugarcodes you would actually be searching for the word river in Amazon.com since the word amazon is a code. So to search using Google you would need to enter g amazon river. This will fetch you the results from Google.

The first question that comes to mind is how does anyone remember all the codes? The answer, is you don’t have to remember though if you can/want it is nice. While typing the first character(s) a list of matching codes will appear instantly under the search box.

There is another version of Sugarcodes called the ‘lite’ version which displays the resulting websites in a frame instead of in the parent window. This will keep the Sugarcodes search box always visible. I prefer to use the lite version for this reason so that I can make new searches quickly.
