System Restore is a great feature in Windows XP. You can use System Restore to remove any troublesome system changes made since the last time you created a Restore Point.

But to start System Restore normally, you need to be able to start Windows XP normally or at least in Safe Mode. But what if the problem is so bad that Windows does not even start in the Safe Mode. Well, there is a way to launch System Restore from a command prompt. Here is how to do it.

  • Restart your computer and press [F8] during the initial startup.
  • When you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu, select the Safe Mode with a Command Prompt option.
  • Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.
  • Type the following command at a command prompt:
    C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Don’t be taken aback by the odd graphic looks. You can still follow the instructions displayed onscreen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

My Hats off to you! I worked on it for hours. Was ready to pull the plug and go to Recover mode! followed the above – I had to wait probably 80 minutes before it hit the log-in page, but it was there! Hit Administrator, and at C:\ prompt put in the magical line! My eyes were greeted with the best looking Restore Pane I have ever seen!!!

Thank you Suresh
